Key Media Concepts (Genre and Narrative)

“Genres are instances of repetition and differences” – Steve Neal (Neal, 48, 1980)

  • Iconography- Visual elements, which suggest a particular genre.
  • Codes and Conventions- The typical items and elements in a particular genre.

– All media text tell a story and the term narrative refers to the way in which these stories are organised.

Most mainstream films follow this structure.

  • Order
  • Disorder
  • Order Restored

Todorov believed that all stories began with balance or in other words, order.

There is then a disruption within the storyline, for example something bad happens to one of the characters (disorder)

There is then a resolution to the disorder, followed by a new equilibrium (order) different to the beginning of the story.
