Key Media Concepts (Narrative)

Narrative Themes– Topics explored within a text.

Single Strand Narrative;

Where one storyline develops in sequential time, event A is followed by event B, C and so on. For example, fairytales and Hollywood movies.

Multi-Strand Narrative; 

Where two or more story lines develop in sequential time, ensemble cast (attracts broader audience.) For example, Soap Operas such as Eastenders and films such as ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’

Open Narrative;

An open ended narrative refers to when a movie or programme leaves the audience wondering what will happen next.

Closed Narrative;

A closed narrative is when a film ties everything up and provides the audience with a resolution. (order)

Linear Narratives; 

Events that occur in chronological order, most common type of film.

Non-Linear;

When films occur not in chronological order, such as went characters are having flashbacks. For example, Memento.
